How to Import T-Splines Models into Rhino 7
T-Splines is a plug-in for Rhino that allows you to create smooth and organic shapes with a flexible and intuitive workflow. However, T-Splines is no longer supported by Autodesk and is not compatible with Rhino 7. If you have T-Splines models that you want to use in Rhino 7, you have three options: import them as SubD objects, import them as NURBS objects, or import them as mesh objects. Here is how to do each of these methods.
Import T-Splines Models as SubD Objects
SubD objects are a new feature in Rhino 7 that let you create and edit smooth surfaces with control points and creases. SubD objects are similar to T-Splines objects, but they do not support T-Joints, which are points where more than four edges meet. To import T-Splines models as SubD objects, follow these steps:
Start Rhino 5 and open your T-Splines model.
If your model is not in box mode, press the Tab key to toggle box mode.
Save your model.
Start Rhino 7 and open your model.
T-Splines objects in your model will import as SubD objects.
If your model has T-Joints, you will need to add or delete edges near the T-Joint to capture the original design intent.
Import T-Splines Models as NURBS Objects
NURBS objects are the standard surface type in Rhino that can represent any shape with mathematical precision. NURBS objects are compatible with most CAD and CAM applications, but they may have more control points and complexity than necessary for some shapes. To import T-Splines models as NURBS objects, follow these steps:
Start Rhino 5 and open your T-Splines model.
If your model is not in smooth mode, press the Tab key to toggle smooth mode.
Save your model.
Start Rhino 7 and open your model.
T-Splines objects in your model will import as NURBS objects.
Import T-Splines Models as Mesh Objects
Mesh objects are a collection of vertices, edges, and faces that define a polygonal shape. Mesh objects are often used for rendering, animation, and 3D printing, but they may not be suitable for precise modeling or fabrication. To import T-Splines models as mesh objects, follow these steps:
Start Rhino 5 and open your T-Splines model.
If your model is not in box mode, press the Tab key to toggle box mode.
Save your model.
Start Rhino 7 and run the AutomaticSubDFromMesh command.
Set the RhinoV5BoxModeTSpline option to mesh.
Open your model.
T-Splines objects in your model will import as mesh objects.
